Description
Sooty bark disease is a devastating fungal condition caused by the pathogen Cryptostroma corticale. It primarily manifests as a severe bark necrosis that leads to the systemic decay of the tree's vascular system. Because of its rapid progression, this disease poses a significant risk to both urban forestry and natural woodland ecosystems.
The fungus is a specialized parasite that predominantly targets various maple species, most notably the sycamore maple. While it was once considered a minor issue, climate change, particularly prolonged hot and dry summers, has facilitated the widespread expansion of this pathogen across the European continent.
The most distinctive symptom of the disease is the production of thick, black, powdery spore masses underneath the bark. When the bark dries and peels away, these dark spores become visible, resembling soot. Additional indicators include wilting foliage, sudden branch dieback, and dark, mottled staining of the sapwood visible on cross-sections.
Environmental stress is the primary driver of infection, specifically prolonged drought, which reduces the tree's ability to defend itself against the fungus. Spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rainwater, but human activity—such as pruning with contaminated tools—is also a major factor in spreading the pathogen throughout plantations.
Management of the disease relies heavily on proactive phytosanitary measures, as chemical control remains largely ineffective once the infection is established:
- Early detection through regular tree inspections and monitoring.
- Immediate removal and destruction of infected timber to prevent spore release.
- Disinfecting pruning tools with appropriate fungicides or alcohol solutions.
- Mitigating drought stress through irrigation and soil management in valuable ornamental stands.
