Description
Cucurbitaria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that acts as a pathogen, causing significant bark necrosis and dieback in various woody plants. Known as a serious threat to both horticultural and ornamental species, these fungi penetrate the host tissue, leading to the gradual degradation of the vascular system and death of infected branches or even the entire plant.
The host range is quite broad, frequently affecting berry bushes such as currants and gooseberries, as well as several tree species like elm, willow, and birch. The fungus typically exploits entry points such as pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the bark and cambium, obstructing the nutrient flow within the plant.
Symptoms are easily identified by the presence of dense, black, granular clusters on the bark, which represent the fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus. Affected areas typically exhibit cracking, discoloration, and a rough texture. As the infection progresses, the leaves on the affected branches wilt and turn yellow, eventually leading to permanent branch dieback and reduced overall vitality of the specimen.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures, which favor spore germination. Spread occurs primarily via rain splashes, wind, and contaminated tools. Orchards with poor air circulation, dense foliage, or accumulation of decaying plant matter are at a much higher risk of widespread infection.
Management and prevention strategies focus on sanitation and preventative treatments. It is critical to prune and remove infected wood immediately, ensuring cuts are made into healthy tissue. Disinfecting tools between plants prevents transmission. Application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season acts as a barrier, protecting vulnerable bark surfaces from colonization by fungal spores.
