Cucurbitaria piceae is a pathogenic fungus that causes a specific necrotic disease known as canker or dieback in spruce trees. As an ascomycete fungus, it colonizes the bark and cambium of branches, progressively disrupting the transport of nutrients and water within the host tree, which eventually leads to the death of the infected tissues.
The disease primarily targets various species within the Picea genus. Trees that are already weakened by environmental stresses, such as drought, poor soil quality, or overcrowding, are significantly more susceptible to infection. The fungus exploits these weaknesses to establish itself and proliferate within the tree canopy.
Symptoms of the infection typically begin with the yellowing and shedding of needles on affected branches, followed by the appearance of dark, pimple-like fruiting bodies (perithecia) on the bark. As the disease advances, the bark may crack or peel, and the branch gradually turns brittle and dry, ultimately resulting in permanent dieback.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease, with high humidity and prolonged rainfall providing ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization.
