Description

The Cucurbitariaceae family consists of ascomycetous fungi that primarily exist as parasites or saprotrophs on the stems and branches of woody plants. These fungi are significant phytopathogens responsible for various canker and necrosis diseases. By invading the bark and cambium layers, they compromise the structural integrity and the vascular transport system of the infected tree, leading to decline and potential death.

A wide range of woody hosts is susceptible to these fungi, including commercially valuable orchard trees and ornamental shrubs. Infection typically occurs when spores land on bark wounds caused by pruning, insects, frost cracks, or mechanical damage. Once inside, the mycelium spreads throughout the woody tissue, consuming nutrients and disrupting the flow of sap, which eventually manifests as localized dieback.

The clinical presentation of the disease often begins with bark discoloration and small, irregular cracks. As the fungus matures, it produces dense clusters of black fruit bodies (perithecia) visible on the surface of the bark. Affected foliage typically exhibits chlorosis and premature wilting. In advanced stages, the infected branch becomes brittle, and the internal wood shows distinct signs of necrotic lesion development.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of the fungus. Periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures favor the production and release of spores, which are spread by rain splashes and wind. Trees that are already stressed due to poor soil, drought, or neglect are significantly more prone to severe infestations, as their natural defense mechanisms are weakened, allowing the fungus to colonize the host rapidly.

Effective management requires a proactive integrated approach to maintain tree health and minimize exposure to pathogens. Essential practices include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to lower the inoculum density.
  • Sterilizing pruning tools after use to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying protective wound sealants or copper-based treatments to exposed wood.
  • Maintaining proper tree vigor through adequate irrigation and nutrient management.
  • Regular inspection of bark for early signs of pathogen activity.
