This fungus belongs to the family Helotiaceae. Biologically, it is highly adapted to environments with high humidity and limited oxygen availability in the substrate. While it typically acts as a decomposer of organic matter, its proximity to living plant crops in poorly drained soil can lead to opportunistic infections.
The host range includes various woody perennials and seedlings sensitive to root zone hypoxia. In nursery settings, crops are at risk when irrigation management fails, leading to stagnant water around the root collar, which facilitates the establishment and proliferation of the fungal mycelium.
