Description

The causative agent of this disease is the microcyclic rust fungus Cumminsiella mirabilissima. This pathogen is highly specific and primarily targets plants within the Berberidaceae family, most commonly affecting the Oregon grape or Mahonia aquifolium.

The host range is limited to Mahonia species. The fungus infects the leaves primarily, but in severe cases, it can colonize green shoots. This infection directly impacts the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor.

Symptoms appear as small, yellowish or reddish spots on the upper leaf surface during the early stages of infection. As the fungus matures, characteristic pustules containing spores emerge on the underside of the leaves, showing a brown or reddish-cinnamon powdery mass.

The development and spread of the pathogen are driven by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the germination of teliospores. Wind and water splashing are the main vehicles for dispersing spores between nearby host plants in gardens or nurseries.

The economic and aesthetic damage is significant, as the infection leads to severe defoliation. A chronically infected plant loses its ornamental value, becomes stunted, and may suffer from increased susceptibility to cold damage and other secondary environmental stressors.

  • Application of appropriate fungicides containing copper or systemic compounds.
