Cumuliphoma blight is a fungal disease affecting various woody plants and shrubs, caused by species within the Cumuliphoma genus. This pathogen is known for infecting the host's bark and stems, where it completes its life cycle by producing clusters of fruiting bodies known as pycnidia.
The host range of Cumuliphoma includes several ornamental and landscape plant species. The infection typically establishes itself through natural openings or wounds in the plant bark, gradually colonizing the phloem and xylem, which disrupts the normal transportation of nutrients and water within the plant.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as localized necrotic patches on the surface of branches. As the fungus spreads, these spots develop small, dark-colored pustules that represent the fungal fruiting structures. Over time, the affected bark may shrink or crack, often leading to dieback of twigs or entire branches located beyond the point of infection.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the spread of the pathogen. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense canopy structures facilitate the germination and dispersal of spores. Consequently, disease outbreaks are more frequent in seasons with extended wet weather and poor orchard or garden hygiene.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Key practices include:
