Description

Cuniculitrema is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi known for causing specific pathological conditions in plant tissues. Although it is not the most common plant pathogen in industrial agriculture, it presents a significant threat to woody ornamental species and forestry, disrupting essential physiological processes and causing localized tissue degradation.

This fungus typically attacks the bark and conductive tissues of trees. The pathogen enters the host through mechanical wounds, cracks in the bark, or natural openings. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deeper layers of the host tissue, interfering with the transport of nutrients and water, which eventually leads to the starvation of distal branches and foliage.

Symptoms of Cuniculitrema infestation often include the formation of necrotic lesions, depressed or sunken areas on the bark, and abnormal swelling or cankers. Over time, the affected bark may crack and peel, exposing the underlying wood. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and premature dieback, which reduces both the aesthetic value and the structural integrity of the tree.

The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. It thrives in humid, shaded conditions where moisture persists on the bark surface. The spores are primarily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and human activities, such as pruning with non-sterilized tools, which facilitates the rapid spread of the disease within a grove or garden.

The damage caused by Cuniculitrema ranges from minor branch loss to the complete decline of the plant. Effective management requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Rigorous sanitation, including pruning and destruction of all infected plant parts.
  • Sterilization of pruning shears and saws after each use to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Improvement of site drainage and pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration.
  • Application of targeted fungicide treatments during high-risk humid periods to inhibit spore germination.
