Description
Cunninghamellosis is a fungal disease caused by members of the Cunninghamellaceae family, which belong to the Mucorales order. These fast-growing fungi are opportunistic pathogens that thrive on organic substrates. In professional agriculture, they are recognized for causing significant post-harvest losses and seedling blight under high-humidity conditions.
The host range for this pathogen is broad, affecting various horticultural crops, seedlings in greenhouses, and stored fruits or vegetables. The fungi utilize a wide range of enzymes to degrade plant tissue rapidly, making them particularly dangerous in environments where organic debris accumulates and creates a reservoir for fungal spores.
Visible symptoms often start with a sparse white mycelial mat that expands into a thick, fuzzy, grayish-white layer over the surface of the plant tissue. Affected plant parts quickly become macerated, soft, and discolored. In seedlings, the infection often leads to "damping-off," where the base of the stem collapses, resulting in rapid plant death.
The development of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly relative humidity levels above 80% and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. The damage caused by Cunninghamellaceae is significant, as it leads to reduced crop quality, poor plant establishment, and the potential for total crop loss in storage if sanitation protocols are neglected.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Maintaining low humidity and good ventilation in greenhouses and storage facilities.
