Curvularia leaf spot

Curvularia affinis

Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Curvularia affinis, which belongs to the Ascomycota division. This pathogen is known for its opportunistic nature, often acting as a facultative parasite that thrives on stressed or weakened plant tissues. It is recognized as a significant agent of leaf spots and blight in various botanical families.

The host range of Curvularia affinis is extensive, including cereals like wheat, rice, and maize, as well as various ornamental grasses and turfgrasses. The fungus can survive as a saprophyte on crop debris or as an endophyte, making it a persistent resident in many agroecosystems across various climatic zones.

Symptoms typically present as distinct, oval or elongated spots on leaves, often with dark brown borders and lighter centers. As the infection progresses, lesions may coalesce, leading to extensive tissue necrosis. In humid conditions, a dark, velvety layer of conidiophores and conidia becomes visible on the surface of the lesions.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease development, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Frequent rainfall or heavy dew facilitates the dispersal of spores from the soil or infected plant residue to the healthy foliage of neighboring plants, triggering rapid secondary cycles of infection.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity and premature leaf senescence. In severe cases, the grain quality is negatively affected, and seed-borne infection results in poor germination rates and stunted seedling development, causing substantial yield losses if left unmanaged.

  • Implementation of a balanced crop rotation system.
  • Application of certified disease-free seeds.
  • Use of seed treatments with broad-spectrum fungicides.
  • Proper management of irrigation to minimize leaf wetness duration.
  • Foliar application of fungicides during high-risk weather periods.
