Description
The pathogen responsible for this condition is the fungus Curvularia cactivora, a common yet destructive organism that primarily affects the Cactaceae family. This fungus functions by infiltrating the plant's epidermis through wounds, pores, or compromised areas, subsequently releasing enzymes that break down succulent tissue rapidly, leading to significant structural collapse.
The disease frequently targets various cactus species, particularly those kept in indoor collections or high-density greenhouse environments. Plants under stress, whether from overwatering, poor lighting, or improper soil composition, exhibit increased susceptibility to colonization by this pathogen. It is a highly contagious disease within confined spaces where air circulation is limited.
Symptoms typically present as small, dark, water-soaked spots on the surface of the cactus stem. Over time, these lesions expand and become sunken, creating a necrotic appearance. Under conditions of high relative humidity, the infected areas often develop a dark, olive-black, velvety coating, which consists of the fungus's reproductive structures and spores.
The development and spread of Curvularia cactivora are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly persistent moisture and lack of adequate ventilation. Temperatures within the range of 20°C to 28°C are most conducive to the rapid growth of the mycelium. In such environments, the disease can transition from a localized spot to systemic decay within a very short period.
Effective management and prevention of this fungal pathogen include:
- isolating affected plants immediately to prevent cross-contamination;
- surgically excising infected tissue with sterilized cutting tools;
- applying copper-based or systemic fungicides to the affected areas;
- improving drainage and airflow to maintain a drier environment around the plants.
