The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Curvularia clavata, a member of the Ascomycota phylum. It is a known phytopathogen capable of infecting various cereal crops and grasses. The fungus is widely distributed in regions with high humidity, where it can lead to significant yield losses if left untreated.
Key crops susceptible to this pathogen include rice, wheat, corn, and sorghum. The infection can occur at any stage of plant development, starting from the seedling stage through to maturity. It is particularly damaging when weather conditions are favorable for fungal proliferation during the grain-filling period.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as small, brown or black necrotic lesions on the leaves, sheaths, and glumes. These spots often develop a concentric appearance with age, and under high humidity, they may be covered with a dark, velvety layer of conidiophores and spores. Extensive necrotic areas lead to reduced photosynthetic efficiency and premature senescence of the plant tissue.
Development and spread of Curvularia clavata are facilitated by high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. The fungus survives primarily in plant debris, in the soil, and within infected seeds. Conidia are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and irrigation water, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly throughout the field during a single growing season.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it directly affects grain yield and quality. Infected plants often produce lightweight, shriveled grains with low germination rates. Furthermore, the presence of specific mycotoxins associated with Curvularia species can render the harvest unsuitable for commercial consumption or animal feed processing.
Management and prevention strategies include several critical agricultural practices:
- Seed treatment with appropriate systemic fungicides to eliminate seed-borne inoculum.
- Implementation of crop rotation cycles to reduce soil-borne pathogen populations.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal or deep incorporation of crop residues into the soil.
- Foliar application of fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, when the first symptoms appear.
- Managing crop density and field moisture to create a less favorable environment for fungal colonization.
