Curvularia leaf spot

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Curvularia cymbopogonis. It is a filamentous fungus belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, which serves as a significant threat in tropical and subtropical agricultural environments due to its ability to infect a wide range of host plants.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include various cereals, such as rice, wheat, and sorghum. Additionally, it can infect ornamental grasses, legumes, and certain vegetable crops, causing significant agricultural and economic losses if left unmanaged during the growing season.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, chlorotic spots on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these spots develop into necrotic lesions, often with distinct brown or dark-colored margins and light centers. In humid conditions, a dark-colored fungal mass can be observed on the surface of the lesions.

Development and disease spread are heavily favored by high levels of environmental humidity and moderate to high temperatures. Warm, wet weather conditions accelerate the production of spores (conidia) and facilitate their dispersal through wind and rain splash, leading to rapid disease development within a field.
