Curvularia eragrostidis is a significant fungal pathogen known for causing various diseases in plants, primarily recognized as the causal agent of Curvularia leaf spot. It is a filamentous fungus that thrives by infecting the epidermal and vascular tissues of its hosts, leading to necrotic lesions that interfere with plant health and overall productivity.

The pathogen demonstrates a wide host range, infecting various economically important crops. Most notably, it impacts cereals such as maize, rice, and sorghum, as well as various types of turfgrasses. Due to its versatile nature, the fungus can also affect several ornamental plants and tropical food crops, often becoming a limiting factor in high-humidity cultivation regions.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, chlorotic or light-colored spots on leaves that progressively enlarge into tan, oval, or irregular lesions. A characteristic dark, velvety mass of conidia and mycelium develops in the center of these spots. Under severe pressure, the individual lesions coalesce, causing extensive blighting of the foliage and significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis.

Optimal conditions for disease development involve prolonged high humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. The fungus survives in soil, infected plant debris, and on weed hosts, making it difficult to eradicate entirely. Conidia are dispersed primarily via rain splashes and wind, facilitating rapid spread within and between fields during favorable weather conditions.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the inoculum levels. Strategies include:

• Utilizing certified disease-free seeds and resistant crop cultivars.
• Implementing strict sanitation by removing or burning crop residue.
• Applying appropriate fungicides, such as triazoles or strobilurins, during the onset of favorable weather.
• Optimizing irrigation practices to prevent prolonged leaf wetness.
