Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Curvularia hawaiiensis. It is a filamentous pathogen known for infecting a wide range of hosts, including grasses, cereals, and various ornamental plants. As a necrotrophic fungus, it kills host cells to obtain nutrients, resulting in tissue decay and foliage damage.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, chlorotic spots on leaves that rapidly enlarge into necrotic lesions. These spots often develop a characteristic dark brown to black color and may exhibit a surrounding yellow halo. As the infection progresses, leaves may become distorted, dry out, and drop prematurely, severely reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Curvularia hawaiiensis. The fungus thrives in warm temperatures ranging between 22°C and 28°C and high humidity levels. Conidia, the reproductive spores of the fungus, are easily disseminated by wind currents, splashing water, and human agricultural activities, including contaminated machinery.
The impact of this disease on agricultural productivity is significant. By destroying leaf area, the pathogen reduces the plant's ability to produce energy, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields. In grain crops, infection can occur during the head stage, potentially causing kernel discoloration and poor quality seeds, which complicates post-harvest storage.
Effective management and prevention strategies involve an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to use certified disease-free seeds and maintain proper irrigation practices to minimize leaf wetness. Fungicidal applications, particularly those containing triazoles or strobilurins, are effective for control. Additionally, removing crop debris and practicing long-term crop rotation can significantly decrease the inoculum density in the soil.
