Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Curvularia inaequalis, which belongs to the group of mitosporic fungi. As a significant plant pathogen, it invades various crops and disturbs their biological functions, leading to reduced agricultural productivity. The infection manifests as necrotic lesions that progressively destroy leaf tissue and eventually cause plant decay.

The host range of this pathogen includes various cereal crops such as wheat, corn, and rice, as well as a range of turfgrasses. Curvularia typically acts as an opportunistic pathogen, taking advantage of plants under environmental stress, nutritional deficiencies, or those grown in poor soil conditions that weaken their natural defense mechanisms.

The symptoms of Curvularia leaf spot usually appear as small, dark brown or black lesions on the leaf blades and stems, often surrounded by a yellow chlorotic halo. As the disease advances, these spots may coalesce into large, irregular necrotic areas. In humid weather conditions, a dark, velvety mycelial growth can be observed on the surface of the infected tissue, which indicates the production of spores.

The disease development is heavily favored by warm temperatures (ranging from 20°C to 28°C) and high relative humidity. The fungus survives in crop residues, soil, and seeds, and is easily disseminated by wind-blown spores and splashing water during rainfall. Proper field management is crucial because even minor lapses in agricultural practice can lead to severe outbreaks in susceptible plantations.

The economic impact of this disease is primarily associated with the substantial loss of photosynthetic leaf area, which significantly impacts grain filling and crop quality. Effective management strategies include:

  • the use of certified disease-free seeds
  • application of appropriate systemic fungicides
  • maintaining optimal soil fertility and drainage
  • rotation of crops to break the disease cycle
  • thorough removal and destruction of crop debris after harvest
