Description
The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Curvularia oryzae-sativae, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. This pathogen is known to negatively impact plant health by producing toxins that lead to localized necrosis and reduced photosynthetic efficiency in host plants.
The primary host for this fungus is rice (Oryza sativa). The disease manifests itself during various growth stages, but it is most damaging during the heading and grain-filling phases, where infection of the panicles can directly result in yield loss.
Symptoms include the appearance of brown or black necrotic spots with lighter centers on the leaves. As the disease advances, the fungal spores produce a dark, powdery mass on the infected surfaces. Severe infections can cause leaf blighting, leading to premature senescence of the foliage.
High humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C are optimal conditions for Curvularia oryzae-sativae to proliferate and disperse.
