The disease is caused by the fungus Curvularia papendorfii, a dematiaceous hyphomycete known for its opportunistic parasitic nature. It is classified as a necrotrophic pathogen that secretes toxins, leading to cell death and the formation of characteristic spots on the host tissues. The fungus belongs to the family Pleosporaceae and is widely distributed in various soil environments.

The host range of Curvularia papendorfii includes a diverse array of plants, including cereals like maize and sorghum, several pulse crops, and ornamental grasses. It can also act as a secondary invader, complicating the diagnosis of other primary infections. Its ability to survive on a wide range of substrates makes it a persistent challenge in diverse agricultural systems.

Symptoms typically appear as irregular to oval spots with dark brown or black margins. As the disease progresses, the centers of the spots may turn lighter, becoming tan or greyish, while a dark velvety layer of conidia develops, especially under humid conditions. In severe cases, the lesions merge, resulting in large blighted areas that lead to premature leaf senescence.

Development and spread are strongly favored by warm and humid conditions. High humidity, ranging from 80% to 95%, combined with moderate temperatures (25°C–30°C), creates optimal conditions for conidial germination and host colonization. The pathogen is disseminated primarily through wind-borne spores, rain splash, and movement of infected plant debris or contaminated seeds across fields.

The economic impact of this pathogen is significant, as it reduces photosynthetic efficiency and can cause substantial yield losses, particularly in seed quality and weight. Effective management strategies involve integrating cultural practices such as crop rotation, residue management to reduce inoculum load, and the prophylactic application of fungicides. Using certified, disease-free seeds is the most critical step in preventing initial field establishment.
