Curvularia leaf spot is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Curvularia spicifera. As a versatile phytopathogen, it affects a broad range of agricultural crops, primarily grasses and cereals. The disease significantly interferes with plant metabolism by destroying chlorophyll-containing tissues, which directly impacts the grain filling and overall development of the host plant.

The disease is particularly prevalent in species such as maize, wheat, rice, and various forage grasses. While it often acts as an opportunistic pathogen on weakened or stressed plants, under favorable environmental conditions, it can infect healthy tissues, leading to severe blights. Its ability to survive in diverse environments makes it a persistent challenge for modern agriculture.

Symptoms typically begin as small, irregular chlorotic spots on the leaf blades that gradually darken to tan or dark brown lesions. In many cases, these spots develop a distinct margin. Under high humidity, the characteristic velvety dark olive to black fungal growth appears on the lesions, which consists of mycelium and conidia, serving as the source for secondary infections throughout the field.

Curvularia spicifera thrives in temperatures between 25°C and 30°C and requires high relative humidity or leaf wetness to facilitate spore germination and infection. The pathogen persists through the winter in crop debris and contaminated soil, re-emerging in the spring as soon as environmental factors become favorable for colonization.

Management strategies for controlling Curvularia infection focus on integrated pest management practices. These include:

  • planting resistant or tolerant crop varieties;
  • managing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle;
  • deep plowing to bury infested plant debris;
  • applying systemic fungicides during the vegetative growth stages.
