Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Curvularia tsudae. This phytopathogen belongs to the group of mitosporic fungi, and it is known for causing localized necrotic lesions on various parts of the rice plant, leading to significant physiological stress.
The primary host for Curvularia tsudae is rice (Oryza sativa). The fungus attacks the leaves, leaf sheaths, and the panicles. In severe cases of infestation, the pathogen can penetrate the glumes and infect the developing grains, significantly impacting the yield potential and grain quality.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, brown or dark-colored spots that appear on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand into elongated shapes, often surrounded by a yellow halo. Under high humidity, the centers of these spots may become covered in a dark fungal growth.
The development of the disease is heavily favored by warm temperatures, typically between 25°C and 30°C, combined with high relative humidity. The spores are primarily disseminated through wind currents and splashing rain, making the crop highly vulnerable during the rainy season or in fields with stagnant humidity.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to minimize crop losses. These include using certified disease-free seeds, implementing strict crop rotation programs, and ensuring balanced fertilization to improve plant resistance. Fungicidal applications during the early stages of disease development are recommended to prevent further spread.
