In an agricultural context, it is primarily recognized for its role in decomposing organic matter rather than as a primary plant pathogen. However, its presence indicates specific soil conditions and high levels of undecomposed organic debris that may affect crop development.

The organism belongs to the group of wood-decay and litter-decay fungi. Its biological cycle is focused on the breakdown of cellulose and lignin. By occupying the niche of decomposing organic material, it can temporarily immobilize soil nutrients, specifically nitrogen, which may lead to nutrient competition between the fungal mycelium and the root systems of cultivated crops.

Crops affected by the colonization of Cyathus include cereals, vegetables mulched with woody materials, and nursery stock. The fungus thrives in environments with an abundance of plant residues, such as straw, wood chips, or uncomposted organic amendments, providing a substrate for its growth.
