Cyathus olla, commonly referred to as the bird's nest fungus, is a saprophytic basidiomycete. In agronomy, it is primarily recognized as a soil-inhabiting fungus that specializes in the decomposition of decaying organic matter, such as straw, wood chips, and other plant debris left on the field surface.
The causative agent is the fungus Cyathus olla itself. While it does not typically infect living plants, it acts as an indicator of poor decomposition processes. Its presence suggests an excessive accumulation of surface organic material, which can harbor more dangerous fungal pathogens that eventually affect commercial crops.
It is most frequently encountered in agricultural fields using conservation tillage methods, particularly those with high levels of crop residue. During periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures, the fungus thrives on the breakdown of cellulose, making it common in wheat, barley, and maize fields after harvest.
Symptoms are identified by the development of unique, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, which resemble tiny nests containing spore-filled eggs. Although it does not cause necrotic spots on leaves or stems, the heavy fungal mycelium can physically inhibit seed germination and compete with emerging seedlings for nitrogen and moisture.
