Cyclotella is a genus of centric diatom algae that, while not a plant pathogen in the traditional sense, acts as a significant biological agent affecting agricultural operations. These microscopic unicellular organisms are characterized by their rigid, silica-based cell walls, which allow them to persist in various aquatic environments.

In modern agricultural settings, Cyclotella impacts production by causing severe biofouling in irrigation and fertigation systems. The accumulation of these algae restricts flow through drip lines, emitters, and filtration units, which leads to reduced water delivery and nutrient deficiency in sensitive greenhouse and open-field crops.

Signs of an infestation often appear as a slimy or gelatinous coating within irrigation pipes and reservoirs. In advanced stages, the water may appear cloudy or tinted, indicating a high concentration of phytoplankton. If left unchecked, these biological deposits can permanently damage sensitive irrigation components.

The development of Cyclotella is primarily driven by high nutrient levels, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, entering irrigation sources through fertilizer runoff. Favorable environmental conditions, such as high solar radiation and stagnant, oxygenated water in storage tanks, facilitate rapid exponential growth of the algal population.

Management and prevention focus on physical exclusion and chemical control. This includes using closed-loop water storage, installing automated self-cleaning filters, and regular reservoir maintenance. Monitoring nutrient levels in irrigation water and using approved algaecides can help prevent clogging and ensure the efficiency of water application systems.
