Cyclothyriella is a genus of fungi within the class Dothideomycetes that acts as a causal agent for various foliar and stem necrotizing diseases in plants. As a plant pathogen, it primarily targets the epidermal tissue, disrupting nutrient transport and causing premature senescence of the foliage.

This disease is commonly found on a wide range of woody plants and ornamental shrubs. By colonizing the leaves, the fungus diverts plant resources for its own reproduction, which can lead to significant defoliation and reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant if the infestation is not managed correctly.

Initial symptoms are characterized by localized lesions or spots on the leaves, which expand over time as the mycelium colonizes more tissue. A diagnostic sign is the appearance of small, dark, raised fruiting structures scattered within these necrotic spots, representing the reproductive stage of the fungus.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. Periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air around the plant canopy create an optimal microclimate for spore dispersal and germination. Consequently, nurseries and dense landscapes are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks.

Control measures rely heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. These include the removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum load, improving air circulation through proper pruning, and applying preventative fungicide applications during high-risk, humid weather conditions.
