Cylindrosporiosis is a significant fungal plant disease caused by pathogens within the Cylindriaceae family. This mycotic infection primarily impacts the foliage and shoots of various woody and berry crops, leading to severe physiological stress and a substantial reduction in overall plant vigor.
The disease is most commonly observed in stone fruits such as cherries, sweet cherries, and plums, as well as several ornamental shrubs. The infection disrupts photosynthetic activity, causing premature leaf drop, which leaves the plant vulnerable and unable to accumulate enough reserves for the following season.
Symptoms typically start as small brown or reddish spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and merge, causing leaf necrosis. A characteristic feature is the appearance of a pale or whitish coating on the underside of the leaves, representing the pathogen's spores, which facilitate rapid secondary spread.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity, mild temperatures, and poor air circulation within the canopy create an ideal microclimate for the fungi. The pathogen overwinters on fallen leaves and bark debris, making sanitation a critical component of the management cycle.
