Description
Cylindrocarpon root rot is a serious soil-borne disease complex caused by fungi of the Cylindrocarpon genus (often reclassified under Ilyonectria). These pathogens primarily target the root systems of a wide range of woody, ornamental, and agricultural crops, disrupting their ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.
A broad variety of host plants are susceptible to this infection, including grapevines, apple trees, ginseng, raspberries, and various nursery seedlings. The disease is particularly damaging in greenhouse environments and nurseries where intensive propagation and high humidity create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the pathogen.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease include browning and necrosis of the root cortex, loss of fine root hairs, and lesions on the root collar. These underground symptoms eventually translate to above-ground distress, such as stunted vegetative growth, chlorosis, vascular wilting, and in severe cases, death of the entire plant.
The development and spread of Cylindrocarpon are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and low soil temperatures. The fungus can persist in the soil for years on infected organic matter, making it a persistent threat in fields and production systems with repeated cropping.
- Improve soil drainage to reduce waterlogging.

- Implement strict sanitation of tools and equipment.
- Incorporate biological control agents like Trichoderma into the root zone.
- Rotate crops to break the pathogen life cycle.
Control strategies must be integrated, focusing on preventing the initial introduction of the pathogen. Once present, management relies heavily on cultural practices, such as optimizing soil conditions and minimizing plant stress, supplemented by appropriate fungicide treatments or biological interventions where necessary.
