Description

The disease known as Cylindrosporium leaf spot is caused by the fungus Cylindrosporium juglandis. This pathogen is a significant threat to walnut plantations, as it specializes in infecting the foliage, causing aesthetic damage and, more importantly, metabolic disruption that hinders the overall health of the tree.

Symptoms typically manifest as numerous small, circular or irregular spots on the leaf surface. Initially brown, these spots often turn grayish as the tissue necrotizes. In the center of these lesions, the fungus produces acervuli, which are small fruiting bodies containing masses of spores. In severe infections, the spots coalesce, causing leaves to curl and drop prematurely.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture. Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and moderate temperatures provide the perfect conditions for the dispersal of spores from the primary source, which is infected fallen leaves. Once the spores land on a healthy leaf, they germinate and penetrate the tissue to initiate the infection cycle.

The damage caused by Cylindrosporium juglandis is cumulative. By reducing the effective leaf surface area, the fungus limits the tree's ability to produce photosynthates. This results in smaller nuts, lower oil content, and weakened woody tissues that are more susceptible to winter injury and other environmental stressors, ultimately leading to reduced orchard productivity.

To maintain healthy walnut trees and prevent the spread of the pathogen, management practices must be prioritized:

  • Rigorous sanitation by raking and disposing of fallen leaves to remove the overwintering inoculum.
  • Maintaining proper orchard spacing and pruning to facilitate airflow and rapid drying of foliage after rain.
  • Applying preventive copper-based fungicides in the early spring as buds begin to swell.
  • Utilizing systemic fungicides during the growing season if weather conditions favor disease development.
