Cymbella is a genus of single-celled diatom algae that frequently colonizes the surfaces of aquatic plants in aquarium environments. While not a pathogenic plant disease in the sense of a virus or fungus, it acts as an epiphytic nuisance that can significantly impact the health and vitality of freshwater vegetation.
The biology of Cymbella centers around its siliceous cell wall, or frustule. These organisms thrive in environments rich in dissolved silicates and organic waste. Because they rely on photosynthesis, they compete directly with the host plants for light and nutrients when their population density becomes excessive.
Cymbella typically affects slow-growing aquarium plants, including various species of Cryptocoryne and Anubias. The algae attach firmly to the leaf surfaces, forming brownish, slippery patches that often spread across the older, less physiologically active leaves of the plant.
Symptoms of an outbreak include the visible appearance of golden-brown or dark-brown slime on leaves and decorative stones. While the algae itself does not destroy the plant tissue directly, the resulting blanket of diatoms inhibits light penetration, effectively starving the plant of the energy required for metabolic processes.
Effective management and prevention strategies involve modifying the aquarium ecosystem to favor higher plants over diatoms. Key actions include:
- Increasing the intensity and duration of lighting.
- Monitoring and reducing silicate levels in the water source.
- Ensuring consistent water changes to remove organic nutrient excess.
- Introducing biological control agents, such as Nerite snails or Caridina shrimp, which graze on diatoms.
