Description
Cymbellales is an order of diatom algae that, under specific agronomic conditions, can act as opportunistic pathogens. While generally known for their presence in aquatic environments, their emergence on crop surfaces—particularly in hydroponics or high-humidity greenhouse environments—can lead to significant physiological stress for the host plants.
The disease is caused by the proliferation of these microscopic organisms on the plant's epidermis. Unlike traditional fungal pathogens, they do not always penetrate the tissue, but their presence effectively blocks sunlight and impairs the stomatal gas exchange, acting as a physical barrier that disrupts the plant's metabolism.
Crops most frequently affected include rice, aquatic plants, and various species grown in intensive hydroponic systems or poorly ventilated greenhouses. Symptoms typically appear as thick, brownish, or olive-colored slimy layers on leaves and stems, which can become gritty due to the characteristic siliceous frustules (cell walls) of the diatoms.
The development and spread of Cymbellales are strongly linked to high moisture levels and nutrient runoff, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen. Inadequate air circulation and high humidity create a stagnant environment that favors rapid colonization. Once established, these algae can form dense mats that are difficult to remove without chemical intervention.
The damage caused by these organisms manifests as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections such as bacteria or molds. Effective management requires precise control of irrigation, maintaining optimal nutrient levels to prevent runoff, and potentially using targeted algaecides to manage outbreaks when physical cleaning or environmental adjustment is insufficient.
