Cyphelium sessile is a distinct species of lichenized fungus that commonly colonizes the bark of mature deciduous trees. In agronomy and forestry, while it is not typically categorized as a destructive plant pathogen, its presence serves as a critical indicator of the tree's health, environmental humidity levels, and the overall microclimate of the stand.
The organism belongs to the family Caliciaceae. Unlike necrotrophic pathogens that invade plant cells to cause tissue death, Cyphelium sessile functions as an epiphyte. It utilizes the bark as a substrate for attachment and derives nutrients from atmospheric deposits, organic dust, and rain, causing no structural damage to the xylem or phloem of the tree.
The primary hosts for this fungus include various Quercus species, particularly those with rough, furrowed bark that retains moisture. It thrives in humid, shaded environments where the bark surface remains damp for extended periods, preventing rapid evaporation. This makes it more common in old-growth areas or dense, unmanaged woodland patches.
Identification is based on the presence of small, black, cup-like structures known as apothecia that appear embedded in the bark. These apothecia may look like tiny specks of charcoal or dark crusts. Because they are superficial, they do not disrupt the growth of the tree, but their density can change the visual appearance of the bark surface significantly.
Management is generally unnecessary unless the lichen growth is aesthetically undesirable on specimen trees in parks or orchards. Control measures focus on cultural practices: thinning dense canopy cover to increase light penetration and air circulation, which reduces the moisture levels necessary for fungal survival. Maintaining overall tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering is the most effective way to prevent the colonization of such epiphytes.
