Cyphellophora infection is a plant pathology caused by fungi belonging to the genus Cyphellophora. These are dematiaceous hyphomycetes, characterized by their dark-pigmented mycelium and spores. As opportunistic pathogens, they often invade host tissues that have been weakened by environmental stress or physical injuries, leading to the development of necrotic spots.

The host range for Cyphellophora species is quite diverse, encompassing ornamental shrubs, fruit-bearing trees, and various herbaceous plants. The infection typically manifests on the foliage, though under favorable conditions, it can spread to stems and reproductive organs, negatively impacting the overall health and yield potential of the plant.

Symptoms usually appear as small, isolated spots that gradually coalesce into larger necrotic areas. These spots often possess distinct dark margins. As the fungal colony matures, it produces reproductive structures within the tissue, which may cause the infected area to become brittle, leading to leaf tearing or shothole symptoms, followed by premature chlorosis and leaf drop.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of this disease. Prolonged leaf wetness, high humidity, and poor airflow are the primary catalysts for sporulation and subsequent infection cycles. Dense canopies that trap moisture allow the pathogen to thrive, making sanitation and canopy management vital components of the disease control strategy.

  • improving air circulation through strategic pruning and proper spacing;
  • applying systemic or contact fungicides during high-risk weather periods;
