Cystofilobasidium is a genus of basidiomycetous yeast-like fungi that, under specific environmental conditions, can exhibit phytopathogenic properties. While many species within this genus are known as epiphytes or saprotrophs, certain types are capable of infecting plant tissues, thereby disrupting vital physiological processes and reducing the yield of agricultural crops.

The disease is caused by micromycetes belonging to the order Cystofilobasidiales. These pathogens are characterized by their ability to multiply rapidly under high humidity and moderate temperatures. The infection is generally classified as a mycosis, which typically leads to necrotic lesions, discoloration of the leaf area, and overall stunting of the plant's vegetative growth.

This fungus affects a wide range of host plants, including cereals, vegetables, and berry crops. The pathogen poses a significant risk to crops during the fruit ripening stage or during post-harvest storage, especially if the plant surface has micro-cracks or physical injuries that facilitate fungal entry into the deeper tissues.

The primary symptoms of infection include the appearance of distinct spots, sometimes accompanied by a visible layer of spores and fungal mycelium. As the disease progresses, the affected tissues may soften, deform, or undergo premature necrosis. In field conditions, accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to the visual similarity of these symptoms to other fungal diseases.

Factors favoring the development and spread of the infection include high air humidity, free water on leaf surfaces, and temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Effective protection strategies involve the following measures:

  • Cultivation of resistant plant varieties.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
  • Sanitation practices in storage facilities.
  • Targeted fungicide application at the first appearance of symptoms.
