Cystopage is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Zoopagales, characterized by a unique parasitic relationship with soil-dwelling micro-invertebrates, primarily nematodes. In agricultural ecosystems, these fungi are recognized for their role in soil biological processes and their indirect influence on plant health through the regulation of rhizosphere microorganisms.
The pathogen functions as an endoparasite, utilizing a specialized mycelial structure to infect and consume its hosts. While primarily targeting nematodes, the presence of these fungi in the soil environment is an indicator of complex ecological interactions that can directly affect the nutritional uptake capacity of crops by altering the soil food web.
