Cystostereum is a genus of basidiomycete fungi responsible for wood decay diseases in various woody plants. As wood-rotting pathogens, they specifically target the vascular and structural tissues of trees, inducing white rot. This biological process leads to the degradation of lignin and cellulose, which significantly compromises the structural integrity of the host plant, often resulting in long-term decline or sudden breakage.

These fungi typically affect a variety of broad-leaved trees, including significant pomaceous fruit species and ornamental woody plants. The pathogen functions as a wound parasite, meaning it predominantly enters the tree through physical damage to the bark, pruning wounds, sunscald injuries, or frost cracks. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the sapwood and heartwood, disrupting the tree’s water and nutrient transport systems.

Key diagnostic symptoms include the development of leathery or crust-like fruiting bodies on the tree's bark surface, which are visible during the reproductive stage of the fungus. Affected areas of the bark may appear sunken, cracked, or discolored. Internally, the wood becomes fibrous and bleached as the decay progresses, eventually leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.

The spread and development of Cystostereum are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and rainfall, which facilitate spore germination. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, rainwater splash, and insect vectors. Because the fungus thrives in moist conditions, orchards with poor air circulation or improper canopy management are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing outbreaks.

Management strategies for this fungal disease focus on strict phytosanitary practices and preventative maintenance. Essential actions include the immediate removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce spore load in the environment. Pruning should always be conducted during dry weather, and all significant wounds must be protected with wound sealants. Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and stress mitigation is crucial for preventing infection.
