Cystostereum murrayi is a pathogenic wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white rot in a variety of tree species. As a lignicolous fungus, it specializes in the decomposition of wood tissues, specifically targeting lignin, which leads to the structural degradation of the host tree's heartwood.

This pathogen commonly affects a wide range of hardwood species and some conifers. The infection process typically begins when fungal spores enter the host through physical wounds, including storm damage, broken branches, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts, allowing the mycelium to colonize the interior wood.

Visible symptoms often include the development of leathery, resupinate, or slightly effused-reflexed fruiting bodies on the bark of infected trees. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation characterized by a bleaching effect and a fibrous, stringy texture, which indicates the progressive breakdown of the timber's cellular structure.
