Description
Cytidia is a genus of fungi classified within the Basidiomycota phylum. In the context of plant pathology and forestry, these fungi are recognized as wood-decay agents that can colonize the bark and outer tissues of various hardwood species, eventually compromising the tree's vascular system and overall structural integrity.
The disease is caused by specific fungal species such as Cytidia salicina. These pathogens typically infect woody hosts, specifically targeting species like willow (Salix), aspen (Populus), and alder (Alnus). They often colonize trees that are already stressed or wounded, initiating a cycle of tissue decomposition within the cambium layer.
Symptoms of an infection are characterized by the emergence of distinct, leathery or gelatinous fruiting bodies. These growths are typically vibrant in color, ranging from bright orange to deep red. As the infection progresses, the host tree exhibits signs of bark necrosis, longitudinal cracking, and localized wood decay, which disrupts sap flow and nutrient transport.
The development and spread of Cytidia are highly dependent on environmental variables. High humidity levels, significant precipitation, and mild temperatures are the primary catalysts for spore production and mycelial growth. The dissemination of spores is facilitated by wind, splashing rain, and occasionally by human activity during pruning operations.
Managing the prevalence of Cytidia requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation and environmental control. Essential measures include the prompt removal of infected branches to reduce the spore load, ensuring proper tree spacing for air circulation, and protecting exposed wood from physical trauma. Applying copper-based fungicides or appropriate protective wound paints can further mitigate the risk of pathogen entry into healthy tissue.
