Cytosphaera refers to a genus of fungi responsible for causing localized necroses and infections in various woody plants. These pathogens, categorized as fungi imperfecti, are known for invading the bark and cambial layers of trees, often leading to the development of cankers and tissue death known as cytosphaerosis.

The infection typically targets a wide range of fruit-bearing trees and ornamental shrubs. The pathogen enters the host primarily through wounds, such as pruning cuts, cracks caused by frost, or damages resulting from insect activity. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the vascular tissues, effectively disrupting the nutrient and water supply to the branches.

Symptoms often manifest as irregular, discolored lesions on the bark that may eventually crack or peel. Upon close inspection, especially in moist conditions, tiny black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia emerge from the infected bark. These structures produce mass quantities of spores, which are the primary means of spreading the infection to other healthy branches.

High humidity, mild temperatures, and poor air circulation within the canopy create an ideal microclimate for fungal development. The disease tends to persist over winter within the dead wood and bark tissues, ensuring the cycle continues once environmental conditions improve in the spring.

  • Protect tree trunks from sunscald and frost cracks using white-wash or shading.
