Description
Japanese Cytospora canker, caused by the fungus Cytospora japonica, is a destructive bark disease primarily affecting fruit trees. It is a necrotrophic pathogen that invades the vascular tissues and cambium of the host, leading to branch dieback and, if left untreated, the death of the entire tree. This disease is widely recognized as a significant threat in intensive orchard systems.
The host range of Cytospora japonica includes various pome and stone fruit trees, with apple and pear trees being highly susceptible. The fungus typically colonizes trees already weakened by environmental stresses, including drought, nutrient deficiency, winter injury, or mechanical damage from improper pruning. Once the tree's natural defense mechanisms are compromised, the pathogen proliferates rapidly.
Visible signs of infection include sunken, discolored patches of bark that turn reddish-brown as the disease progresses. A characteristic feature is the appearance of tiny pimple-like structures, known as pycnidia, which emerge through the bark surface. In advanced stages, the internal tissue becomes spongy or turns into a characteristic brown rot, eventually causing the leaves to yellow and dry out while remaining attached to the branches.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of the pathogen. High humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the release of fungal spores. These spores are easily disseminated by wind, splash rain, and human activities, such as using unsterilized pruning tools. Fresh wounds and dormant buds are the primary entry points for infection, making hygiene practices essential.
Effective control requires an integrated approach. The most critical step is the immediate excision of infected limbs, cutting well into healthy wood to ensure all traces of the fungus are removed. Tools must be disinfected after every cut to prevent cross-contamination. Preventive applications of copper-based fungicides, particularly before the growing season, and proper orchard maintenance—such as managing tree vigor—are the most effective strategies to suppress the pathogen.
