Description

Cytospora canker of pine is a serious fungal disease caused by Cytospora pini. This pathogen is known as a facultative parasite, meaning it primarily attacks weakened or stressed trees, colonizing the bark and cambium layers and causing localized necrosis that can eventually girdle branches or stems.

The disease primarily targets various pine species (Pinus spp.). It is particularly destructive in commercial pine plantations, urban landscapes, and forest nurseries where trees may be subjected to environmental stressors such as drought, frost cracks, or poor soil drainage, making them more susceptible to the fungal invasion.

Visible symptoms often include the appearance of sunken lesions on the bark, accompanied by discoloration. In the later stages of infection, small, erumpent stroma (fruiting bodies) emerge through the bark surface. Under moist conditions, these structures release masses of spores, typically appearing as yellow, orange, or reddish tendrils, which is a classic diagnostic feature.

The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spores are disseminated by rain splash, wind, and insect vectors. Because the fungus often enters through wounds caused by pruning, insects, or environmental damage, the pathogen can remain present in a dormant state until a period of physiological weakness allows it to become active.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Because there is no simple chemical "cure" once the fungus has colonized the wood deeply, focus must be placed on prevention. This includes proper irrigation during drought, minimizing bark injuries, and prompt removal and destruction of infected branches to reduce the spore load in the surrounding environment.
