Description
Cytospora canker of pomegranate is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cytospora punicae. This disease primarily targets the bark and cambium layers of the plant, leading to necrosis, tissue death, and the eventual wilting of branches. It is a persistent threat in many regions where pomegranates are cultivated, often complicating orchard management.
The primary host for this pathogen is the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum). The fungus enters the plant through wounds caused by pruning, insects, frost cracks, or sunscald. Once inside, it colonizes the vascular tissues, effectively cutting off the plant's supply of nutrients and water to the distal parts of the tree.
The characteristic symptoms include localized browning or blackening of the bark. Over time, the affected area becomes depressed, and the bark may crack or peel away. Close inspection reveals small, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus protruding through the bark. Under humid conditions, these structures release spores that can be seen as small, coiled tendrils.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and frequent rainfall favor the development and spread of Cytospora punicae. Spores are easily disseminated by splashing water, wind, or contaminated tools during routine maintenance. Trees suffering from environmental stress, poor irrigation, or inadequate soil fertility are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungus.
The damage caused by this disease is severe, often resulting in the loss of major branches and significantly reducing fruit yield. If left untreated, the infection can become systemic, leading to the death of the entire tree. Effective management strategies involve the removal of infected wood, sterilization of pruning tools, and the application of protective fungicide sprays to maintain plant health and vigor.
