Cytospora schulzeri is a serious fungal pathogen known for causing bark necrosis and canker in various woody plants. As an ascomycete fungus, it acts as a parasite that invades the cambium and phloem layers of the host, systematically disrupting nutrient transport and causing the tree to weaken or die.
This pathogen primarily targets pome and stone fruit trees, such as apples, pears, and apricots. It thrives on trees that are already stressed due to environmental factors, including frost damage, sunburn on the bark, or improper pruning, which create entry points for the fungal spores to colonize the host tissue.
The primary symptom is the development of dark, sunken lesions on the bark, which eventually spread and girdle the branch or trunk. As the disease progresses, the bark becomes brittle and dry. A key diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, raised pycnidia (fruiting bodies) on the surface of the infected bark, which release spores, often appearing as slimy tendrils under humid conditions.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus disperses through wind, splashing rain, and contaminated pruning tools. Insect vectors may also play a role in transporting spores between trees in an orchard setting.
