Cyttaria is a genus of parasitic fungi known for causing prominent galls on the branches and trunks of Nothofagus trees, commonly referred to as the Southern Beech. These fungi are considered obligate biotrophs, meaning they rely entirely on the living tissues of the host tree to complete their life cycle.
The causal agent belongs to the class Leotiomycetes. These fungi exhibit high host specificity and are found primarily in the temperate forests of the Southern Hemisphere, including regions in South America, Australia, and New Zealand, where the host trees naturally grow.
The primary clinical sign of infection is the development of spherical or irregular woody galls on the tree limbs. During the reproductive phase, these galls produce bright, honeycomb-like structures that release spores. These structures are often visible to the naked eye and can become quite large as the infection progresses over several years.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the dissemination of the fungus. High humidity and rainfall are essential for the maturation and release of spores from the galls. Once released, the spores are dispersed by wind and splashing rain, landing on fresh wounds or soft bark tissue where they initiate a new infection cycle.
The impact of Cyttaria on the host tree involves the disruption of sap flow and nutrient transport. While the disease rarely kills the host tree quickly, the massive galls significantly weaken the structural integrity of the branches, leading to breakage under environmental stress. This results in reduced vigor and can make the tree more susceptible to secondary wood-decaying organisms.
