Cyttaria exigua is a parasitic fungus belonging to the family Cyttariaceae. It is exclusively associated with trees of the genus Nothofagus (southern beech). This organism is categorized as an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle and develop its unique fruiting bodies.

The fungus targets specific species of southern beech, causing significant structural changes in the host's stems and branches. The infection process results in the formation of woody galls. These galls are not merely surface growths but are deep-seated structural modifications caused by the fungus interacting with the tree's internal hormonal system.

The most recognizable symptom is the appearance of bright orange or yellowish, sphere-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge from the galls during the peak reproductive stage. These bodies, often referred to as «fungal berries,» release spores that are carried by wind and rain to infect new host tissues or neighboring trees.

Development and spread of Cyttaria exigua are highly dependent on high moisture levels and specific temperate climate conditions. The pathogen thrives in humid forest environments where moisture persists on the bark surface, providing the necessary environment for fungal spores to germinate and colonize the tree host effectively.

The harmful impact of this disease manifests as reduced vigor, branch dieback, and potential structural weakness of the affected wood. While not always fatal, heavy infestations reduce the tree's overall health and aesthetic value.
