Cyttaria hookeri is an obligate fungal parasite that specifically infects trees belonging to the Nothofagus genus, commonly known as southern beech. This fungus is well-known for inducing the formation of extensive, tumor-like galls on the branches and trunks of its host, fundamentally altering the tree's growth pattern and structural integrity.
The host range is limited to specific species of Nothofagus located in the temperate rainforests of South America, particularly in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. As an obligate parasite, Cyttaria hookeri relies entirely on the host's living tissue, creating a long-term symbiotic relationship that frequently leads to the host's decline over several decades.
The visual symptoms are quite distinct, appearing as spherical, bright yellow to orange fruiting bodies that erupt through the bark during the warmer seasons.
