Description

The Cyttariaceae family comprises a unique group of ascomycetous fungi that act as obligate parasites on trees of the genus Nothofagus, commonly known as the southern beech. These fungi are highly specialized, having evolved alongside their hosts in the Southern Hemisphere. They are distinct for their ability to induce significant morphological changes in the host tree, transforming healthy tissues into sites for fungal reproduction.

The disease is caused by species of the genus Cyttaria, which are biotrophic pathogens. The infection process involves the invasion of the cambium and other living tissues, leading to the development of woody galls or tumors. Inside these host-induced growths, the fungus develops its vegetative body, absorbing nutrients and eventually producing external fruit bodies that emerge from the bark of the host tree.

Symptoms of Cyttariaceae infection are visually striking. The most prominent sign is the formation of honeycombed, globular stromata that protrude from the affected branch or stem. These fruit bodies are often bright orange or yellow, becoming especially visible during the sporulation phase. Over time, the affected parts of the host plant become deformed, and chronic infection may result in the necrosis of bark and secondary wood decay.

The environmental conditions favoring the development and spread of these fungi include persistent high humidity and cool, temperate climates. Moisture is essential for the activation of fungal spores and their successful penetration into the host's surface tissues. Spore dispersal is primarily mediated by wind and rain, which help the pathogen spread throughout dense forest stands during the active growing season of the host.

The economic and ecological impact of this pathogen is primarily observed in forest health management. While these fungi are natural components of Nothofagus ecosystems, they can reduce the growth rates of individual trees and lower the quality of timber. Protection and control strategies are generally limited to sanitary measures, such as pruning infected branches in managed forests or removing heavily infested trees to prevent local outbreaks and preserve the overall health of the forest stand.
