Description
Dacrymycetales are an order of fungi within the class Dacrymycetes. In the context of plant health and forestry, they are recognized as wood-decaying fungi responsible for causing brown rot. These pathogens act as decomposers by breaking down cellulose and hemicellulose in the cell walls of trees, ultimately leading to the structural failure of the host material.
The host range of these fungi primarily includes both coniferous and deciduous trees. They are commonly found on deadwood, stumps, and the decaying sections of living trees. In agricultural settings, they are often associated with aged fruit trees that possess significant bark damage or wounded areas, making them susceptible to colonization by opportunistic fungal species.
The symptomatic presentation of an infection usually involves the emergence of distinctive, gelatinous, or waxy fruiting bodies which are often bright yellow, orange, or reddish in color. Beneath the surface, the fungal mycelium colonizes the woody tissue, causing it to lose its structural integrity. The final stage of decay is characterized by the wood turning brown and crumbling into cubic fragments.
The development and spread of Dacrymycetales are largely dependent on high moisture levels and suitable temperatures. Spores are released into the environment and typically infect the tree through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or structural cracks in the bark. Moist environments provide the necessary conditions for the spores to germinate and for the fungal hyphae to penetrate deeper into the wood.
Prevention and control strategies focus on sanitation and physical protection. Removing debris, deadwood, and infected stumps is essential to reduce the local inoculum density. Furthermore, protecting pruning cuts and mechanical wounds with appropriate fungicides or wound sealants creates a barrier against infection. Maintaining tree vigor through proper pruning and irrigation management is also critical in preventing susceptibility to these wood-decay pathogens.
