The fungus colonizes plant tissues by utilizing its mycelium to break down complex organic compounds, eventually leading to structural instability and physiological decline of the host plant.

The host range for this pathogen includes various conifers such as spruce, pine, and fir, although it can occasionally be found on broad-leaved species. Infection usually initiates through compromised bark barriers, such as mechanical wounds, pest-induced holes, or weather-related cracks.
