Dactylium disease is a fungal infection caused by the pathogen Dactylium obovatum. This fungus acts as a significant threat to various agricultural and ornamental plants, often causing soft rots and extensive tissue degradation. It belongs to a group of pathogens that exploit high-humidity environments to proliferate rapidly.
The host range of Dactylium obovatum includes several vegetable crops and it is notably recognized as a persistent concern in commercial mushroom cultivation. The fungus typically targets damaged or overly moist plant tissues, using its enzymatic activity to break down cell walls and extract nutrients, which weakens the plant systemically.
Symptoms include the appearance of a cottony white mycelium on the surface of the infected material. As the infection progresses, the tissues become soft, watery, and eventually collapse.
