Description
Dactylonectria is a genus of pathogenic fungi that belongs to the Nectriaceae family. These soil-borne pathogens are notorious for causing devastating root rot, wood necrosis, and vascular diseases in various woody plants. Formerly identified within the Cylindrocarpon group, these fungi represent a significant challenge in modern horticulture and viticulture.
Grapevines are particularly susceptible to Dactylonectria species, which are primary agents of the "black foot" disease complex. This condition is responsible for severe dieback in young vineyards and nursery stocks worldwide. The fungi colonize the root system and the lower part of the trunk, severely disrupting the plant's physiological processes.
Typical symptoms manifest as stunted vegetative growth, chlorosis, and general vine decline. In the final stages, affected vines exhibit crown dieback and death. Diagnostic examination reveals distinct necrotic lesions on the roots and a dark, reddish-brown discoloration of the xylem vessels when the stem is cross-sectioned.
The development of the disease is highly correlated with environmental stressors. Factors such as waterlogged soil, poor drainage, and physical damage during transplanting create ideal conditions for fungal penetration. The disease spreads primarily through contaminated nursery propagation material, as well as soil movement and irrigation water contaminated with fungal spores.
Effective control measures require an integrated management approach because curative fungicides are generally ineffective once the plant is systemically infected. Growers should focus on strict preventive strategies:
- Source high-quality, disease-free nursery plants.
- Ensure optimal soil drainage and avoid deep planting.
- Disinfect pruning tools regularly to prevent cross-contamination.
- Maintain balanced plant nutrition to boost inherent stress resistance.
- Perform proper site preparation to minimize soil compaction.
