Dactylonectria alcacerensis is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Nectriaceae family, recognized as a primary causative agent of Black Foot disease in grapevines. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause progressive decline, vascular dysfunction, and eventually the death of infected plants.

The primary host for this fungus is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The pathogen frequently affects young vines in nurseries and recently established vineyards. It is a soil-borne fungus that typically infects the root system and the crown of the vine, leading to structural damage in the vascular tissues.

Diagnostic symptoms include stunted shoot growth, chlorosis, and marginal leaf necrosis. The most definitive signs appear underground: necrotic, blackened lesions on the roots and the base of the trunk. Over time, the internal wood tissue shows discoloration, which restricts the flow of water and essential nutrients to the upper parts of the plant.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the proliferation of the pathogen. High soil moisture levels, poor drainage, and cool temperatures are key triggers that facilitate the infection process. The fungus can persist in the soil for several years and spreads through contaminated nursery stock, water runoff, and agricultural implements.

Effective management and prevention strategies rely on a multi-faceted approach. Primary control involves sourcing certified, disease-free nursery stock and implementing strict hygiene protocols during planting. Maintaining soil health through improved drainage and avoiding excessive irrigation are essential to mitigate the risk of infection. Chemical control is limited, thus preventive sanitation remains the most reliable method to ensure vineyard longevity.
